g|Philippines Conference Day 1 Report

So I got into a Google event they have here in the islands. I wish I could go to the weekend but seeing their conference agenda is more suited to the education sector instead of marketing, I opted not to come. Also I'm hella broke. It was a fun conference and very educational. I wouldn't lie if I said I wish they gave away Nexus in the confab. Man I need a new phone. So without further ado, the g|Philippines report.
Before everything, I have live tweeted the events I attended in my Twitter account here: https://twitter.com/MCFreelancealot

KEYNOTE ADDRESS

I think I missed the opening speech by Usec. Manuel Quezon III, but what I did see is the keynote address by Loren Shuster. He talked about the role of Google in the emerging market of the Philippines.
Someboy from First Post posted a Youtube video of his speech:

INNOVATION AT GOOGLE

After the keynote we are treated with Sebastian Trzcinski-Clement. I still don't know how his last name is pronounced. Showed some cool stuff on Nexus, Google Goggles, self-driving golf carts. One of my concern is: did Google just shaft every AR app maker? Of course not, I think. There's still Skype after Google chat and Hangouts right?

We are also treated with this gem: The Dollar Shave Club video. I must have been slow to get wind of it. I should have seen it back in May. Oh well.
Now if only I shave five times a week rather than once a week in order to save on blades. If they ever come to the islands maybe I would.

And we also have Nexus in Jellybean showing off. So with the Nexus, you could do anything you do with the  iPhone plus more like transferring data by having your phones contact each other and synching to different devices. I could use it to synch the Google map data I got over the internet from my laptop into my smartphone. That's more nifty than just transferring contact data.

There are many other cool things that made me tweet like the Google Art Project so go in there folks!

And we had snacks. Clubhouse sandwiches and chips.

Demystifying Google Adwords

We have Darshini Santhanam explaining on how Adwords can help your business. Her talk about being the first comer is revealing. Apparently no one in the Philippines is using Adwords for car insurance, movie tickets in Makati, muay thai equipment, and SEM agencies. Also geotargeting and others. Speaking of geotargeting, they are now offering it to target congressional districts in the US.

ROI+

The talk seamlessly moved into Return of Investment.

Yeah people. Also was told that the longer your history with Google and the higher the quality of your site, the less you would spend on the ad. Because they love big beautiful data and they can't lie.

And now we had lunch. Was carrying it around too long that my right hand can't be used properly. OH NO RIGHTY! And then we discovered that there is a dining area in the back.

YOUTUBE FOR CONTENT PARTNERS

Basically they say that you can be a Youtube content partner and earn some monies on advertising. Somebody took your content? You get them to block it or get advertising money from their ads. Your choice.

They presented us this clip called Youtube Brandcast:

Also had a question answered on why ads load faster than the actual content. At first they answered with "nah" then they went to me and answered that the ads were just compressed better. I said that they could just have told me that or that I just suck at compressing a video and I would be content with that. Many laughs were made and stuff. Nexus stuff and general geekery.

GOOGLE BUSINESS GROUP

Next we have the guys that made this all possible. They stress that they are not with Google or something. Mostly about how to run businesses. I have this book that I've read about how every startup should have a consultant or mentor. They're saying the same. If I did found some startup I might look up for these guys.

And now for muffin breaks. They got cheese and blueberry. Now I'm hungry again after typing these. Also, I'm a horrible speechifyer.

ADSENSE FOR PUBLISHERS

Yay! More AdSense. This is actually the part that piqued my interest in this conference. Other than the prospect of a free Nexus. WHAT SHOULD I DO GOOGLE?

The talk is about where to put your ads and not being a greedy arse on it. I find that there are a serious lack of advertisers here in the Philippines so there's not a lot of money in Google Ads which in turn makes other publishers turn to other sites. Maybe there's something lacking on my part on my venture back then. It is hard for an indie webcomic artist out there. D:

DOUBLECLICK FOR PUBLISHERS

What I understood from the speecch is that Google has a CMS to manage your ads. You could go one on one with the advertiser to feature their ads and when their click or impressions that they bought from you are used up they revert into the standard Google ad so that you won't have any blank space in your ad space. Nifty.

I also asked around if they use G+ data on the thing. Their answer is: That's creepy. Well I can think of more creepier things to do with it. Like marriage proposal ads targeted to a specific IP address. How about that? Who's the creep now? ehem.

So thanks a lot for reading these whole post and thanks for Google and the GBG Philippines for making these event happen. It's a great day of meeting other people outside the internet and hey free lunch. Will be looking forward to other events and free Nexus (I don't give up.). Also thanks to Alexei Rivera of Technoclast accompanying me in the last quarter of the day. his website is here:http://www.thetechnoclast.com/
